At Excel, we have been looking at the names of God every other Wednesday evening, over the past couple of weeks. The name Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord my peace, was discovered by Gideon when God assigned him the job of leading Israel against the Midianites – a job Gideon felt was far above his abilities. Gideon said: ‘How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family’ (Judges 6:15). The Lord responded: ‘I will be with you, and you will strike down all Midianites…Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’(V.23) Gideon believed God and through his faith, saw victory and gained peace of mind. He then built an altar to Jehovah-Shalom: the Lord my peace. Like Gideon, let us learn that inward peace does not depend on changing difficult circumstances, but by believing that Jehovah-shalom is always with us and will bring us through every battle with inner peace.
