Faith Births Courage

The bible teaches us to be strong and courageous. When we are courageous, we are brave and not deterred by fear, danger or pain.

There are times in all our lives when we may be frightened and distressed about the future, particularly when we look at the world around us today. But true courage comes from trusting God. It comes from believing what God says regardless of what the circumstances look like. This means that courage grows from faith.

We need courage whenever we feel led to take on tasks greater than anything we could ever accomplish by own power. This is when we draw on what we know about God. Moses was tasked to lead the Israelites out of Egypt back to the promised land. David had to slay goliath to become king. The prophet Elijah was to go against 450 prophets of Baal to prove he served the one true God.

Zerubbabel was given a daunting task to lead the exiled remnant from Babylonian captivity back to Jerusalem and lay the foundation for the temple. He needed a lot of courage and God’s divine help to accomplish this task. Zephaniah 4:6 says: ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit” says the Lord Almighty.’

If you have been discouraged lately by a task or situation that you find too daunting, have courage; stop listening to the voice of fear and trust in the power of God to come to your help. God is an ever present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46).
